Why Japan is THE place to be right now (and how to make the most of your trip!)

It's official: Japan has become everyone's go-to destination, and for good reason.

My family and I hopped on the Japan bandwagon back in April 2024, and I'm here to spill the tea on why this country is having such a major moment.

Getting There Just Got Easier (and Cheaper!)

Remember those days of dreading long layovers and expensive flights? Yeah, those are over. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has been offering direct flights to Japan for a while now, and as of June 2024, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) joined the party! This means more options and cheaper fares for those of us on the East Coast.

Your Wallet Will Thank You

Okay, I know what you're thinking: "Japan? Isn't that super expensive?" Surprisingly, no! While certain things can be pricey (looking at you, high-end sushi), overall, we found Japan to be incredibly affordable. My family of nine had amazing meals with drinks for under $250 USD. Pro tip: look for local eateries and smaller restaurants for the best deals.

Transportation That Actually Works

Japan's public transportation system is next-level. Their trains are famously punctual, clean, and insanely fast. We took the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Kyoto, and it was a total game-changer. The journey, which would have taken over 5 hours by car, took just 2 hours and 15 minutes! Plus, the train stations themselves are like futuristic wonderlands.

Shop 'Til You Drop (Without Breaking the Bank & Getting Some Nice A$$ Stuff)

Calling all fashion loversssss! Japan is a haven for vintage and secondhand shopping. Think designer labels, unique pieces, and incredible prices. Some must-visit spots include:

  1. 2nd STREET: A massive chain with locations all over Japan, offering a huge variety of clothing, accessories, and home goods.
  2. Kindal: Known for its curated selection of high-quality vintage and secondhand clothing. I got a Lambskin Chanel Boy Bag in white here for $3,200 in pristine condition. 👏
  3. RagTag: Another popular chain specializing in designer brands at discounted prices.

Embrace the Culture

The Japanese people are incredibly welcoming and polite. While there can be a language barrier, most people are eager to help and appreciate any effort you make to communicate. Download Google Translate and learn a few basic Japanese phrases before you go!

Beyond the Tourist Trail

While the iconic sights like Tokyo Tower and Fushimi Inari Shrine are a must-see, don't forget to explore the hidden gems. Wander through the charming backstreets of Kyoto, grab a Sapporo and people-watch in Osaka, or get lost in the vibrant nightlife of Shinjuku.

Ready to pack your bags? Japan is waiting! With its unique blend of tradition and modernity, delicious food, efficient transportation, and friendly locals, it's no wonder this country is topping everyone's travel list. Do your research, plan your itinerary, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
